WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to reserve unique usernames, enhancing privacy by enabling communication without sharing phone numbers. This update, which is set to become available worldwide later this year, represents a significant shift towards privacy-focused communication on the platform.
Users can secure their unique usernames in advance of the feature’s full rollout. Once operational, individuals will have the option to use their usernames instead of phone numbers when initiating new chats. This can be done by updating the app and navigating to Settings, then Account, and selecting Username. Notifications will inform users as the feature becomes available in their respective regions.
Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp will not be implementing a public search directory for these usernames. This means that only those who know a user’s exact username will be able to reach out, significantly reducing spam and unwelcome messages. To further enhance control over communication, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key that users can share, granting them more control over who can initiate conversations.
While the introduction of usernames offers an alternative to phone numbers, WhatsApp confirms that this feature remains optional, allowing users the flexibility to continue using their phone numbers if they wish. This update also caters to creators, businesses, and organizations looking to maintain a consistent identity across services provided by Meta Platforms. It is anticipated that users will have the opportunity to reserve matching usernames on other platforms when available.
