This innovative technology has been trained on millions of ECGs, enabling it to detect subtle patterns that may elude doctors during a conventional ECG review. In a US trial involving 67,000 patients, the AI successfully identified up to 81% of individuals with heart failure and up to 90% with heart valve disease.

ECGs are one of the most commonly conducted medical examinations, with about one billion administered worldwide annually. Despite their widespread use, patients suspected of heart conditions frequently require an echocardiogram, a procedure often accompanied by lengthy wait times. The AI tool is not intended to replace a comprehensive diagnosis but rather to assist physicians in identifying high-risk patients who should be prioritized for echocardiograms and additional testing, potentially facilitating more timely treatment interventions.

Researchers suggest that this technology holds the potential to revolutionize the way ECGs are utilized. The AI could eventually be employed to analyze ECGs conducted for other medical purposes, potentially uncovering previously undetected heart conditions. This capability may enhance the preventive measures against serious cardiovascular problems by identifying risks earlier in the process.

The team behind this development is also considering the creation of portable AI-powered ECG devices for use by healthcare professionals. Such devices could significantly improve the accessibility and speed of early heart condition detection, thereby providing critical support in medical settings where resources are limited.
