Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia has made a heartfelt call to residents of Johor who are living and working in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to return home for the upcoming state election on July 11. Emphasizing the significance of every single vote, Anwar urged these individuals to participate actively in shaping Johor’s future. During an address in Kulai, Johor, he specifically appealed to young voters and those employed overseas, underscoring the critical role they play in deciding the state’s governance. Although the election results will not impact his role as Prime Minister, Anwar noted that the outcome will be pivotal for Johor’s state administration.
In his remarks, Anwar delineated the roles of federal and state governments, clarifying that while the federal administration is responsible for major infrastructure projects like the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, state officials should concentrate on addressing local issues. These include the maintenance of public housing, support for small traders, and improving community services. Anwar pointed to the progress achieved in public housing by other Malaysian states through collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry, suggesting that Johor should enhance its local governance efforts similarly.
Further, Anwar contrasted the welfare distribution systems of the federal government and the Johor state administration. He highlighted that federal financial assistance is directly transferred to recipients, eliminating the need for them to queue in person. This streamlined process, he suggested, could serve as a model for state-level welfare distribution. Anwar conveyed that the federal government intends to broaden its welfare assistance programs in the future, though he refrained from providing specific details on these plans.
The Prime Minister’s address also served as a reminder of the federal government’s ongoing commitment to major infrastructure initiatives, while encouraging state authorities to tackle more localized concerns. By emphasizing the importance of voter participation and clarifying the division of responsibilities, Anwar aims to motivate Johoreans to engage more deeply with the political process and ensure their voices are heard in the state election.
