An American citizen who had been unable to depart Iran since December 2024 has now been released, U.S. President Donald Trump announced, calling it a “gesture of goodwill” from Tehran. This development is seen as a positive move amid the strained relations between the United States and Iran.

In his statement, Trump confirmed that the woman had left Iran safely and expressed gratitude towards Iranian authorities for facilitating her release. Despite the geopolitical tensions, this act is viewed as a constructive step between the two nations.

The woman has been identified as Dena Karari, a dual U.S.-Iranian national. According to her lawyer, Karari was accused of espionage and collaborating with a hostile nation, charges the attorney labeled as baseless. Throughout her ordeal, Karari was repeatedly interrogated by Iranian intelligence officials, although she was never formally imprisoned.

Despite not being held in a detention facility, Karari reportedly suffered significant physical and psychological distress during the lengthy investigation process, her attorney stated. Her inability to leave Iran for several months had added to the challenges she faced.

This release occurs against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both governments continuing to exchange harsh rhetoric. Nevertheless, the humanitarian gesture provides a glimmer of hope for potential diplomatic engagement.
