UN Secretary-General Urges Lasting Gaza Ceasefire Three Years After Hamas Attack

by admin477351

As the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Guterres underscores the necessity for a sustainable political solution, increased humanitarian aid, and adherence to international law as critical steps toward lasting peace.

The deadly attack by Hamas resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals, along with the capture of 251 hostages. While condemning this assault, Guterres also emphasized the severe humanitarian toll on Palestinians in Gaza, where Gaza health authorities report more than 74,200 Palestinians have perished due to Israel’s military actions in the region.

Reflecting on the ceasefire established in October 2025, Guterres noted that while it has brought some respite, it has fallen short of providing enduring security, adequate humanitarian support, or a viable path to recovery and peace. He implored both Israelis and Palestinians to work towards ending their suffering and establishing conditions where both communities can coexist with security, dignity, and respect for their rights.

The Secretary-General’s remarks highlight the ongoing challenges in achieving peace in the region, urging renewed efforts to foster an environment conducive to a peaceful resolution, where both parties can live in harmony and their fundamental rights are safeguarded.
