Japan’s New Luxury Power Move: Hotel Okura to Open 2029 Hakone Resort Where Every Room Has Its Own Hot Spring

HAKONE, JAPAN – Luxury in Japan is getting a major upgrade. Hotel Okura just announced its first-ever domestic resort—Okura Resort Hakone Gora—and it’s defining a new standard: every guest gets their own private outdoor onsen.

Set to open in 2029, the resort drops 58 high-end rooms into one of Japan’s most in-demand hot spring regions. And these aren’t symbolic tubs—each bath is a real, steaming Owakudani-fed hot spring pool.

The project, powered by a July 2025 partnership with Nishimatsu Construction, puts Hotel Okura in the center of a region that draws nearly 20 million visitors a year. Designer Gwenael Nicolas is crafting a “Forest Hideaway” retreat where modern luxury meets rugged Hakone terrain.

Around the property, guests can soak in indoor hot springs, unwind in saunas, savor teppanyaki cooked in front of them, and enjoy evenings in a sleek bar lounge.

This isn’t just a new resort—it’s Hotel Okura’s boldest statement yet in Japan’s luxury travel scene.
