Indonesia is leveraging its substantial nickel and copper resources to enhance its role in the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry by bolstering digital infrastructure. According to Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria, the processing of these critical minerals is crucial for developing resilient, efficient, and sustainable digital infrastructure that can generate greater domestic value.
Nickel and copper play a key role in the construction of AI infrastructure, being essential components in batteries, electrical equipment, transmission networks, and systems supporting data centers. With Indonesia producing approximately 62% of the world’s mined nickel, the country holds a significant position within the global mineral supply chain. Patria stressed that this advantage should be supported by responsible processing practices, environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices.
The development of AI infrastructure, however, requires more than just access to mineral resources. Patria highlighted that reliable electricity, fiber-optic networks, data centers, cooling systems, skilled workers, and effective governance are also necessary components. This comprehensive approach aims to not only support the AI sector but to also strengthen Indonesia’s digital economy and expand its technology workforce.
Indonesia’s strategic use of its mineral resources aims to position the country as a regional AI hub. By focusing on higher-value job creation and developing domestic technological capabilities, Indonesia seeks to build a robust digital ecosystem that can support sustained economic growth and innovation in the AI field.
