Jakarta and New York are in discussions about a possible visit by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to the Indonesian capital. This development follows a recent meeting between Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in New York, where they explored common urban challenges and potential areas for collaboration.
Governor Pramono Anung indicated that talks regarding Mayor Mamdani’s visit are still in preliminary stages, with no official confirmation yet about his attendance at a conference in Jakarta slated for late October. The visit will be announced once details are finalized.
During their meeting at the U20 Mayors Summit 2026, both officials discussed shared issues such as public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution, and urban development financing. Mayor Mamdani showed interest in Jakarta’s initiatives to improve traffic flow and enhance public transport systems, while Governor Pramono highlighted the development of Transjabodetabek, a regional transportation network linking Jakarta with neighboring areas.
The discussion also covered municipal financing strategies, with Governor Pramono presenting plans for Jakarta to issue municipal bonds, called Jakarta Bonds, aimed at funding infrastructure and development projects. In response, Mayor Mamdani proposed facilitating collaboration between the financial teams of New York and Jakarta to exchange expertise on municipal bond issuance.
These discussions represent a growing interest in cross-city collaboration, focusing on leveraging shared knowledge and experience to tackle urban challenges effectively. As talks progress, further announcements are expected regarding the potential visit and the cooperative efforts between the two cities.
