In a bid to fortify bilateral relations and advance economic cooperation, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commenced a three-day working visit to China on Tuesday. This trip underscores the enduring partnership between Malaysia and China, which have maintained a robust trading relationship for nearly two decades.
Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, is focusing on enhancing trade and technological collaboration during his visit. He is set to engage in high-level discussions with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday, aiming to expand cooperation in emerging technologies and digital trade.
While in Shanghai, Anwar will attend the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 event, where he will deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference. Following this, he will participate in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour. These engagements are expected to spotlight the significance of artificial intelligence, digital trade, and international partnerships.
Throughout his visit, the Malaysian prime minister will also meet with Chinese business and technology leaders to promote foreign investment in Malaysia. This initiative is part of broader efforts to leverage Malaysia’s strategic position and foster economic growth through increased collaboration with China.
The economic ties between the two nations remain strong, as evidenced by the bilateral trade figures, which reached US$113.82 billion from January to August this year. This solid trade relationship highlights the mutual benefits and continued importance of Malaysia-China economic exchanges.
