As these disruptions ripple through the market, natural gas and coal prices are also on the rise, leading to increased costs for electricity generation, according to Malaysia’s Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.
Initially, the global energy supply disruptions primarily influenced petrol prices. However, their impact on other fuels, such as natural gas, has emerged with a noted delay. Historically, natural gas prices have taken several months to react to significant changes in oil prices, which is now evident as these fuels are crucial for electricity production.
This development poses a particular concern for Malaysian consumers, especially those who use more than 600kWh of electricity per month, as they are more directly affected by fluctuating fuel prices due to the country’s electricity tariff mechanism. In contrast, most households using less than 600kWh monthly remain insulated from these direct cost changes under the current tariff structure. However, their total electricity bills can still increase if their consumption rises.
Adding to the issue, Malaysia is experiencing hotter weather and haze conditions, factors that could drive up household electricity usage as people rely more on cooling appliances while spending more time indoors. This shift in consumption patterns could exacerbate the impact of rising energy costs on household budgets.
In response to these challenges, the Malaysian government is exploring measures to mitigate the impact of increased electricity costs on households. At the same time, officials are keeping a close watch on global energy market developments to better navigate these volatile conditions.
