As Malaysia grapples with rising electricity consumption driven by intense heat and haze, the government has introduced a temporary measure to alleviate the financial burden on households. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced an increase in the monthly electricity consumption threshold eligible for subsidies, raising it from 600kWh to 800kWh. This adjustment, intended to ease cost-of-living pressures, will remain effective until December 31.
The new threshold means that households using up to 800kWh per month will be exempt from the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA), as well as applicable retail charges and the Sales and Service Tax (SST). The AFA, implemented in July 2025, is a mechanism that modifies electricity charges monthly based on fluctuating fuel prices, which can lead to either rebates or additional charges for consumers.
As households face increased electricity use due to the adverse weather conditions, the government is keen on ensuring that the electricity tariff policy remains balanced. Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the need to maintain affordability, while also securing energy supply and considering the long-term sustainability of the sector.
The administration is committed to monitoring global fuel prices and energy market trends closely, aiming to adapt policies as necessary to support household budgets without compromising the energy sector’s stability. This proactive approach seeks to address immediate needs while keeping an eye on future implications.
