In a bid to assist in the aftermath of catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is seeking the green light from Nepali authorities to dispatch DNA specialists to aid in identifying victims. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the deployment of these experts is contingent upon approval and will commence once search and rescue missions are finalized. Their primary task will be to match DNA samples from the remains of recovered bodies with those provided by the families of missing Malaysians.
The urgency of this mission is underscored by the fact that Malaysia has already gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who have not been accounted for since the natural disasters struck. With some of the bodies having been interred rapidly due to the limited availability of facilities, the role of DNA testing becomes crucial in the identification process, ensuring that families receive closure regarding their loved ones.
In preparation for this mission, an 11-member team from Malaysia is ready to deploy alongside 12.4 tonnes of essential rescue equipment. This includes state-of-the-art detection tools, robust communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tunnel-rescue gear. The team is also equipped with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in the complex operations ahead.
Malaysia’s concerted efforts in combining search, rescue, and DNA identification are aimed at locating missing individuals and confirming the identities of those affected by the disaster. These measures are hoped to bring much-needed answers and solace to the families who are anxiously awaiting news of their missing relatives.
