In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng hosted Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing in Hà Nội on September 5. The high-profile meeting marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first official visit to Vietnam since assuming his new role. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across various sectors. Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s journey toward stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth, while Min Aung Hlaing expressed admiration for Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its rising influence in the region and globally.
Both leaders acknowledged the positive developments in their bilateral relationship and underscored the importance of increasing high-level exchanges to foster political trust. They agreed on the necessity of resuming key cooperation mechanisms, particularly in trade, security, and defense. The discussions highlighted the potential for defense and security cooperation to become a cornerstone of their partnership. Efforts to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking were identified as priorities, alongside plans to enhance military training and young officer exchanges.
Economic collaboration featured prominently in the talks, with both sides exploring opportunities to boost trade and update existing agreements on trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investment in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The leaders committed to enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, with a focus on restoring direct flights and developing joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On regional matters, Vietnam pledged to continue working with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both nations supported resolving disputes peacefully in line with international law. As a gesture of their growing partnership, Hưng extended an invitation to Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and to preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. Reciprocating, Min Aung Hlaing invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a time that would be mutually convenient.
